To further provide extensive care to Renew clients, we are now providing a new winter service option. This service, billed monthly at a special, winter-only discounted rate, is available from November through February with exclusive service options, allowing your property to continue receiving Renew-quality care year-round to improve its health and longevity.
Our team will provide an extensive, custom pruning visit throughout one of these winter service months (December through February) to ensure all trees and shrubs are properly pruned. A significant advantage of performing pruning during the plants' most dormant state (through the winter months), rather than during active growth, is that it minimizes unnecessary stress on the plants. Due to the plants' dormancy and because insects are also less active during this period, we can affectively conduct severe pruning with minimal risk of pest and disease issues.
Extensive winter pruning encourages uniform growth, helps the plants maintain appropriate sizing, and enhances plant health while extending the lifespan of the plantings. This prevents them from quickly outgrowing their designated areas. Depending on the size of your property and state of the plants, this tailored process will focus on each category of your specimens to ensure continuity throughout the pruning process.
Winter pruning by Renew includes meticulous hand pruning using sharp, sterilized equipment to prevent disease transfer and promote uniform growth, enhance tree health, and improve overall landscape aesthetics. We will work with you to come up with a custom plan to prune your trees and plants, including specimen trees, evergreen trees, and ornamental perennials based on our collaborated priority. Unique care processes per category of plant will be conducted to ensure proper pruning of each specific type according to its needs.
This winter service also represents a cost-effective approach to safeguarding your perennial landscape investment by avoiding expensive plant and tree removals due to insufficient maintenance. We will collaborate with you to achieve the desired outcomes for your individual trees and plants, ensuring your satisfaction.
At the end of the winter season, when your trees and shrubs are precisely pruned for optimal health, our technicians will apply a plant growth regulator as a part of this full-service winter package. This treatment is a foliar spray that is absorbed by the leaves and translocated to the shoot tips. By temporarily stopping shoot elongation and promoting lateral branching, this product reduces the need for trimming and pruning while improving plant appearance by gradually filling in growth. The results are a reduced need for pruning, growth continuity and more abundant blooms!
This treatment is applied to all trees and plants that are at risk of damage from deer and elk. These animals can cause significant injury to shrubs and trees - so much so that full recovery takes years, if at all. The repellent product, on the other hand, gives off a foul taste to these animals, deterring them from repeated snacking. One application at the beginning of the season should ensures longevity of shrubs and trees. However, in severe cases, more than one application may be needed for best results.
Sunscald is a lesser-known yet major threat to trees, especially those with thin bark, during the winter. Sun reflecting off of snow onto the bark brings dormant cells to life. Then, as the temperatures drop each day when the sun goes down, these cells can rupture. The continual warming and re-freezing of the cells and sap often results in vertical cracks down the tree. This process, which is like a tree sunburn, can result in injury or even death to the tree, especially as pathogens can more easily find their way in. Black, darkened or splitting bark is a tell-tale sign of sunscald.
Wrapping the trunk of the tree with tree wrap is the best protection against sunscald. As a part of our winter service, trees will be wrapped from the base to the lower limbs, protecting them from severe scalding.
Due to seasonality and the unique ability to perform extensive pruning during this dormant state, our winter package offers pruning at a highly discounted rate compared to our fall/spring cut-back services. So with the protection it provides your plants, the long-term health and appearance benefits for your landscape and the significant cost-savings, this winter package option is a no-brainer!
